Tertiarisation et transformation de l’espace urbain : la rue McGill à Montréal (1842–1934)

Abstract
This paper uses a space in Montréal (McGill Street) to analyze the growth of the service-based economy between 1842 and 1934. Specifically, it focuses on the urbanistic and architectural aspects linked to the expansion of the service sector. Reflecting the main trends that have shaped the service-based economy, McGill Street’s built environment shows development tendencies that prevail in the modern metropolis. Up until 1900, the service-based economy is controlled by merchants of different sizes and whose activities take part at the local and regional level. After 1900, retail activities retreat to make place for industrial activities and offices in the transportation and communication sectors. Thus, the increased importance taken by management services gives McGill Street a new role in Montreal’s economy.
